Fiat has confirmed that the Fiat Punto facelift is on the business plan of Fiat India for 2014. The action would the first major design overhaul for the hatchback since the Indian launch in 2009.

The Punto facelift has been spotted on test around Fiat’s Ranjangaon plant in Maharashtra regularly this year, with complete camouflage. And last week, a presentation prepared by Fiat’s headquarters showed a small graphic of the Punto facelift with the headlamps seen on the Fiat Avventura, a pseudo crossover of the Punto unveiled at the Auto Expo.

Design highlights on the Punto include a larger grille, a fresh bumper with revised foglight enclosures and generous chrome surrounds on the foglights. The refreshed Punto will sport the updated cabin from the 2014 Linea.

The Fiat Punto facelift gets the same dashboard as the refreshed Linea shown here.

Engine options are very likely to come off the current Punto lineup which is decked with two petrol engines and one diesel engine. The base petrol is a 1.2-liter unit generating 68 PS and 96 Nm of torque, while the 1.4-liter unit generates 90 PS and 115 Nm of torque.

The big seller, the 1.3-liter diesel, comes in power states of 76 PS and 197 Nm and 93 PS and 209 Nm torque. All variants are driven via a 5-speed manual transmission.

With same options in Petrol engines, the new Punto is unlikely to take off although it might see some surge in numbers because of those fab interiors which would be best in class. But its only the diesel which will sell and thats a shame as FIAT has got some truly amazing petrol engines but FIAT India is least interested in stirring up the market and launch something interesting.
They have also failed to reduce the weight of their cars without compromising on their hallmark ride and handling. Result is ARAI mileage of 15.7 for the decade old FIRE engine. Truly pathetic considering what a nice car Punto is!
