Posted on: Jan 30, 2014 - 10:48am IST

VW India has announced that it will offer airbags for the driver and passenger as part of the standard equipment on all trims levels of the Polo hatchback. This safety feature was earlier available only on the top-end ‘Highline’ variant of the car.

All variants of the VW Polo get dual front airbags as standard.

Additionally, the mid-level ‘Comfortline’ variant of the Polo will now feature ABS as part of its standard equipment. Again, ABS was earlier restricted only to the top-end variant.

The German carmaker has also announced a price hike on the Polo and Vento which will come into effect from February 1. The price hike, up to INR 22,700 on the Polo and up to INR 26,800 on the Vento, is to counter increased input costs and the fluctuating exchange rate.

Arvind Saxena, managing director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Group Sales India Pvt. Ltd, said –

We are proud to be leading the cause of driver safety, and we believe the introduction of airbags as standard fitment across all variants of the Polo is a major step forward in the context of safety. Once again, this step underlines our commitment to producing better cars – and better-equipped cars – for the discerning Indian consumer.

Hi.. I appreciate the decision, but think in some other way. all middle class is now getting car, if this airbag becomes a mandatory accessary in all cars. just for a hit in axle of the front wheel it ll get opened, so to replace it, it ll cost 75K per bag (MINimum).. and the insurance they are providing only 50% for airbags.. who ll help them in replacing it with that much cost….if anybody is going to make this mandatory.// think how to make it in lower prices…(dont say it ll save us from death so money doesnt matter… the hit in the axle wont lead for any death) so that every one get benifitted and ll be safe…ABS its the must as mentioned in one comment.

volkswagen is once again, following its ‘Simply Clever’ sibling Skoda.

the fabia was launched in india with dual airbags as standard, and also with more content.

it was only later that it reduced them to help big sister 😉 positioning of VW

    Simply Clever, eh?
