Spied – Tata Nano Diesel with openable hatch

Posted on: Oct 28, 2013 - 2:12pm IST

[Update: Team BHP informs us that this is the petrol powered Nano, though the fuel dispenser reads diesel, it dispenses only petrol.]

These spy images courtesy of Team BHP show a Tata Nano with a camouflaged hatch and front bumper, filling up on diesel somewhere in Maharashtra (if you notice carefully, the petrol dispensing pump is located in front of the diesel pump and from the positioning of this test mule, we conclude that this is a diesel powered Nano). The positioning of the exhaust pipe is also different on this test mule.

Note the positioning of the test mule next to the diesel pump (blue background shade represents diesel).

Powering the diesel Nano could be an 800cc, twin-cylinder engine producing about 40 bhp at 4,000 rpm. The turbocharger for this engine could be made by Garrett Turbochargers. We expect the ARAI rated fuel efficiency at about 35 km/l, thus making the Nano diesel the most fuel economical car in the country.

The positioning of the exhaust pipe is also different on this prototype.

Previous spy images have shown the Nano diesel sporting a conventional hatch with a handle and a keyhole located on the bottom of the door, while the design of the rear windscreen is also new. Other cosmetic changes come in the form of redesigned front and rear bumpers. While the rear bumper would get a larger air intake, the front bumper would give the Nano a ‘smiley’ face.

The diesel Nano would get redesigned front and rear bumpers.

Tata Motors Managing Director and CEO, Mr. Karl Slym, confirmed that the Nano diesel will launch this financial year and as a result, we expect Tata to show the diesel Nano at the 2014 Auto Expo in February.

I’ve been thinking of buying a Nano for my city drive requirements for sometime now. From the time the 2012 Nano was launched, there are hardly complaints about this car.

If there’s a Diesel Nano coming by March 2014, I’m going for it without second thoughts !!!!

If this is indeed the Nano diesel, this could be the last throw at the dice for TATA Motors. If they could get a decent motor , NVH levels and pricing to acceptable levels we are looking at a game changer and the Nano could sell like ice cream in HELL !!!

The first thing Tata should introduce is power steering. Then it becomes a whole lot nicer to drive in city and is a tempting city package.

    Nano got a new dress…!
I tend to believe Jay Prashanth due to the presence of two wheelers, but definitely new engine. But the question of this being petrol or diesel once again fall in the loop. Wish the spyshots also included sound.

  7. Dear Anjan,

This is a Nano Petrol. The bunk where the car refuels is in Pimpri, just a stone throw away from TML. Your logic about the Blue-Diesel, Green-Petrol is right. However, the signage is just that, signage. The individual nozzles under the “Blue” section of the bunk, in this particular case, dispense petrol.

PS: You can notice similar signage on the right side of the Nano, and also the absence of fuel dispenser. Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

    Jay
