IAB World Exclusive – Nissan Terrano spied testing

Posted on: Jul 1, 2013 - 11:57am IST

The Nissan Terrano was spotted testing in Chennai recently and this is the first time that we get to see the actual car. Yes it does have camouflage on it, but we don’t know why Nissan India is bothering with all that, given that we know what the car looks like.

These images were clicked by Mr. Gokulraj Kanagaraj, avid Indian Autos Blog reader and founder of MyCopie (makers of notebooks that have covers featuring augmented reality). Gokul caught the Terrano testing near the Chennai airport (Grand Southern Trunk Road that eventually leads to the Renault-Nissan plant in Chennai).

This is what we observed from these images:

1. The front fascia of the Terrano stays true to the official sketch released by Nissan India. We see certain details such as the honeycomb grill are exactly as seen on the sketch. The headlights, though camouflaged, reveal the sharp design of the Terrano.

2. We were the first to point out that the Terrano would feature a different side crease on the door: Where the Duster has a crease in an inverted U-shape, positioned higher up in it’s body, the Terrano sketch featured a straight crease in the lower half of it’s body. The test mule also sports this crease, which means that Nissan is making sheet metal changes to the car.

The ergonomics in the DUSTER are screwed up. Lets hope NISSAN rectifies it.

The rear view mirror (ORVM) enclosing on the A pillar is a complete plastic casing now, On Renault Cars such as LOGAN & DUSTER you have a small round plastic to hold the ORVM which looks cheap.

Additionally the B pillar has been blacked out, which is good.

A Rear Wiper. I guess DUSTER doesn’t come with a rear wiper even on the high end variant.

Looks like NISSAN is filling the void left by RENAULT

They should have changed the Door Handles. These Lift type handles looks cheap.

    Cheers,

    Good work Shrawan & team.

Mighty impressed with what I’m seeing in the Terrano. Nissan has done the costly metal sheet changes, the front and rear fascia are re worked and the interiors too get some much needed treatment. And the official sketch of Terrano was really good. Hope the production version comes close.

This is simply brilliant. Finally, a true blue SUV design in the compact segment, unlike that hatchback on stilts that was recently launched.
Contrary to some rumours on the interweb last week that it would not follow the official sketch, this initial production version proves that it indeed is a more handsome, rugged design, with loads of road presence compared to the Duster.
Just a few observations. The one big disappointment is that Nissan has retained the old-fashioned lift-type door handles. Wish it would be replaced by what they have on the Sunny or Micra. The tail light cluster seems to be horizontal in structure, and could be a lot like the EcoSport’s, with the blister wrapping itself around it angularly. From the profile, the tailgate seems to be angled inward toward the bumper, making it look starkly different to the hunchback shape of the Duster. And finally, is that a rear parking camera on the top of the rear window? Thanks for the spy shots Mr. Gokulraj. This is one baby worth waiting for, whatever the pricing.

Nissan should change the Rear View Mirrors, the current ones on Duster looks very small compared to rest of the body.

NISSAN TERRANO IS LOOKING SOLID, BIG,, SLEEK AND AWESOME. IT WILL BE THE BIGGEST EVER HIT IN INDIA EVEN THAN THE FORD ECOSPORT AND RENAULT DUSTER. NISSAN RIVALS WATCH OUT !!! THE REAL SUV IS COMING. NISSAN IS ALWAYS ACKNOWLEDGED WORLDWIDE FOR ITS GLOBAL RENOWNED SUVS. I HAVE NO WORDS TO SAY BUT WHAT I CAN SAY IS THAT NISSAN BRAND WILL BE EVEN MORE AND MORE STRONGER IN INDIA BY OCTOBER 2013 . NISSAN TERRANO WILL SELL LIKE HOT CAKES IN INDIA. I BET FOR SURE. ITS AWESOME AND A SOLID SUV.

A little TOO much hyperbole for a yet-to-be-launched vehicle, don’t you think?

You said it. After all it is based on a cheap logan platform and the dacia duster itself got a miserable 3 star rating in Euro NCAP crash test. The long term reliability of the duster itself is quite suspect if we go by reports from knowledgeable reports abroad.

Will it come with CVT ?

      Hi Hitin,

At least not initially. Nissan may want to explore their CVT options on the diesel given that the Product Planner told us that they would do so if demand for such a product existed (on the Micra). On the Terrano, it will drive up costs (and the Terrano will be expensive compared to the Duster as it is).

    Wow..
That’s a nice catch you guys got at IAB. It definitely looks nicer than Duster. Hope Nissan get the interiors right!
When do you guess it may be launched? Diwali?
    Thanks
