Hyundai India is about to get a vital boost as its diesel engine plant is nearing the D Day.

new Hyundai i20

Currently, Hyundai has two petrol engine plants within its Chennai facility with a combined output of 6.5 lakhs units per annum. The new flexible diesel engine manufacturing plant will add a further 3 lakh units per annum.

So far, Hyundai has been importing diesel engines for its products which adds to the cost. Considering that about 25% of the car maker’s domestic sales are from diesel models the diesel engine plant comes in as a huge cost saver.

Mr. R. Sethuraman, director (finance & corporate affairs), HMIL, told financial express –

Currently, diesel contributes 25% of our domestic sales, that is around 100,000 units, as we import and sell it in India, which involves high cost. The new plant not only gives us a cost advantage but also give us enough room to push more diesel car offerings based on demand.

The new engine plant will enable Hyundai to add more diesel models to its lineup. The company has announced four products in the next two years including the next gen i10 and an upcoming compact crossover SUV. Both these products will offer diesel engine options.

Armed with the diesel engine plant and the compact SUV, Hyundai will attempt to launch an assault on the Ford EcoSport, Renault Duster and the Nissan Terrano. A fierce mini SUV battle awaits!

It is so happy to hear that hyundai india is working for a compact crossover SUV.I have read the interview of HMIL director (finance & corporate affairs) R Sethuraman.”A new car code named ‘BA’ to be positioned between i10 and i20 as well as an utility vehicle during the second half of this year. “The new car will be offered in both petrol and diesel versions,” Sethuraman added. Is that utility vechile would be ix35? I hope so because ix35 dimensions match like a compact SUV.It have Overall Length (mm) 4,410, Width (mm)1,820 and Height (mm) 1,655.I think new ix35(tucson) is build on hyundai verna’s platform(global accent) .Even the head light of ix35 look very similar to verna. So hyundai india can be easily build ix35 with verna’s platform. It have very less chance from hyundai to bring a new global suv for india alone. As engine wise they may not face any problems because they have elantra/verna engine options and also they are planning with new diesel engine plant .It is also very important with the launching date and pricing.Because the current compact suv segment is booming with competently priced ecosport ,duster and upcoming terrano.I hope that hyundai india will not repeat the pricing like previous version tuscon and ix35 with a starting price of 9-10 lakhs will be reachable for customers.
