Chevrolet Enjoy front three quarters - test muleAccording to a news article posted on AutocarIndia.com today, General Motors India started series production of the Chevrolet Enjoy MPV on the 4th of February at its manufacturing plant in Halol, Gujarat, where the Tavera and the Cruze are produced.

While the diesel engine is the 1.3-liter Fiat-based Smartech, the petrol engine's specification was always a secret. Autocar India has managed to expose this detail - its a 1.4-liter unit that makes 94.6 bhp.

Mr. Lowell Paddock, Managing Director of GM India told Indian Autos Blog late last year at the Sail U-VA media program that the Enjoy would be powered by the same motor (mechnically) as the U-VA, meaning there won't be a VGT to boost performance. Paddock confirmed that the Enjoy would be presented in 2+2+3 and 2+3+3 seating layouts.

Mr. P. Balendran, Vice President Corporate affairs, at the launch of the Sail sedan in Chennai earlier this month, said "GM India is quite upbeat about the product. I have seen the competition product, and our product, and the Enjoy stands out, and that's how it's also going to be priced."

The Enjoy will compete against the Maruti Ertiga which on paper has identical powertrains and proportions. We expect GM to undercut the Ertiga, variant to variant, substantially in prices.

The Enjoy is a rebadged Wuling Hongguang MPV launched in the Chinese market by the SAIC-GM joint venture. It is one of GM's leading vehicles, in sales, sourcing power from 1.2-liter and 1.4-liter petrol engines. A cosmetic refreshment program is being undertaken for the Hongguang in China for 2013, but the visually updated model will not come to India anytime soon.
