Suddenly, the fire monster has started haunting the Tata Nano again. Recently, there has been a string of events where the Tata Nanos are catching fire all across the country. 2 in Gujarat, 1 in Chennai, 1 in Sri Lanka now its New Delhi. The Economic Times reports that a brother-sister duo barely escaped when the Nano they were travelling in suddenly ignited.

The incident took place near ITO at around 8:15 PM. Nishant (25), a student, and his sister 35-year-old sister Suman (35) were going to Connaught Place from their Krishna Nagar residence when the two sensed smoke from the back of the car. They immediately exited the car to a safe location. A little while later, fire engulfed the entire car. Fire brigades were rushed to the spot to douse the flames.

Tata Motors has recently recalled all the Nanos for updating the ECU software to avoid over cranking of the engine. However, one gets the feeling that TML is not able to locate the exact fault in the Nano that is causing this sudden incineration. Are these stray incidents? Is the driver doing something he shouldn’t?

This is the second safety update (first was safety tools to avoid short circuiting and over-heating) to the Nano since its launch and still the company is unable to put an end to the fire tragedies.

What is going on with Nano. Nano is not the first car Tata is making so why is this happening. My 2 relatives are using Nano and they are still safe from this. Am from Kerala and have not heard any Nano going up in flames in my state. Ferrari’s latest 458 Italia had the same problem of going up in flames but Ferrari rectified the problem of some gum used to stick the plastic cover inside rear wheel arch (Topgear is the reference). Have seen some issue with wiring of Nano in an accessory shop when an audio system was fitted. I think Tata should completely re-engineer the wiring and the cooling mechanism of the engine. Or rethink the whole idea of keeping the engine in the back. Whatever you do Tata please make it fast.

Good .. Tata Motors . Keep going . Just 90 short of 100.

I wonder how such good-for-nothing companies and hopeless products survive . All this can happen only in India … India .. India .nowhere else.

Being a Nano owner myself I can confidently say the Nano is a safe car. I drove from Bangalore to Goa a week back and have now completed 30,000 km and not a single problem. It’s a great car. The incident is unfortunate but could’ve been due to servicing outside TML or opting against taking the free safety precautions. Let’s not accuse anyone just yet.
