Our very own country’s beloved car has become the best selling hatch in the world.
Yes we are talking about Maruti Suzuki Alto. Our Alto has become the largest selling small car in 2010 beating the global competition black and blue.
Be it VW Golf from Germany or VW Gol from Brazil, our Alto created history by becoming the first car majorly sold and exclusively manufactured in India to become the global best seller.
Brand-Model-Sales-Market
Maruti Suzuki – Alto – 300,950 – India
Volkswagen – Gol – 293,783 – Brazil
Volkswagen – Golf – 251,078 – Germany
Fiat – Uno – 229,323 – Brazil
Suzuki – Wagon R – 195,000 – Japan
Diahatsu – Tanto – 191,000 – Japan
Ever since its launch in 800 cc avatar, Alto has been and setting and then breaking records. The recently launched Alto K10 has spiced up sales figure giving it the opportunity to hit the dream 40,000/month mark. Speculations are rife on a 2-cylinder Alto for 2011, which could replace the entry-level Alto running with the 800′s tweaked engine. If Maruti can get the pricing right, there are chances of the Alto doing even better.
Some of the key factors which have made Alto a stand out product:
- Brand Maruti
- Most desirable affordable car in country
- Fuel efficient
- Peppy and refined engines
- Easy to drive
- Easiest to maintain
- Bullet proof reliability
No wonder this gem from Maruti is giving sleepless night to competitors. Almost every manufacture wants to be in Alto’s segment but can’t figure out how. Hyundai, Tata, Fiat and Chevrolet would also be offering their products in the same segment in the next couple of years and it would be interesting to see if the king is able to retain its crown.

@Shravan, ya right
@Shravan , The article is not correct
in US 2010 figures are like this
Ford F-Series 528,349
Chevrolet Silverado 370,135
Toyota Camry 327,804
In Japan
Toyota Prius 315,669
which are well above alto sales
Bhagwath – thanks for the stats. The Maruti Alto is the world’s best selling “hatchback” as per the title and the story itself
The F-Series is a truck and the Camry is a sedan.
please send me maruti alto details ,price on road in kolhapur, maharashatra and other details
worlds best selling hatch is not the alto you’ve shown, its the a star which is sold as alto in foreign markets, please correct your article in order to not mis inform others.

@Tarun – The Maruti Suzuki Alto (and not the global Alto) was 2010′s best seller. Here’s another media report to confirm the same – http://www.hindustantimes.com/Alto-is-world-s-small-car-No-1/H1-Article1-647666.aspx
