To this day, I can still hear the gentle spool of the Volvo S60 that we drove quite a while back. Sadly, Volvo India is not doing that great in the Indian market. The three Germans have literally gobbled up the Indian Luxury market, leaving the Swedish company with very little customers.
A very important reason why the German are leading is because of their ‘Executive’ versions of the products. Executive means the same cars in terms of engines and other technical specifications but stripped off their luxury features. This is totally a volumes game where numbers matter the most.

Volvo, till now, did not have executive versions of any of their car. All of them were fully loaded and thus had a higher price tag which made them a bit uncompetitive. But all of that is about to change.
The company reportedly has plans to launch stripped-down variants of some of its models to boost sales.

Volvo is present in the Indian Market since 2007. Unfortunately, both the S80 and XC90 models have failed to make any serious inroads in the German dominated territory. This was not going to deter the Scandinavian giant and they decided to hurt the German trio where it would hurt them the most – Sports Sedans.
On March 11, 2011 Volvo brought its ‘Sportiest Ever’ sedan – the S60 in the Indian Market and immediately received 100 bookings in just a week.
Considering each Volvo S60 T6 is for 36 lakhs a pop, we wanted to find out what Volvo the S60 is all about. So we got ourselves a media car and got cracking!!

Indian Autos Blog has learnt if all goes well, Volvo will launch the ravishing S60 in India by the end of February next year. Volvo is keen on extending its model line-up in India, as at the end of the day, there’s no better publicity than a new product.
Volvo is also working to increase its footprint in India with more dealers. By the end of 2010, there will be 9 dealers and at the end of 2011, there will be 14. The focus for the company is sedans and SUVs as they make up about 90% of the volume for its competition.
Volvo will introduce the S60 with perhaps two engines to start with – the 205hp 2.4 twin-turbo diesel and the 3.0-liter 6-cylinder T6 petrol capable of 300hp. From there on, we could see more affordable variants including the introduction of a 2.0-liter engine.
The S60 will be positioned in the league having the front-running C-Class and 3 Series.
