The Tata Indica Vista EV (Electric Vehicle) did not get the required support from the British government for a local assembly line, eventually forcing Tata to look elsewhere for the required sum. But in Norway, things have looked brighter and the government has granted permission to set up a plant that will assemble Indica Vista EV SKDs brought from India.

The Indica Vista EV runs on lithium-ion battery packs and will become India’s second EV to be exported – the first car was the Reva or G-Wiz known internationally.

The Indica Vista EV offers massive cabin space and is perkier than the diesel and petrol counterparts. It has a top speed of 151kmph and a offers 190Nm of torque.

The Indica Vista EV will be produced in association with Miljo Grenland / Innovasjon, Norway in which Tata Motors’ UK subsidiary, Tata Motors European Technical Centre plc, holds 70 per cent stake.

Tata Motors to go ahead with Thai eco-car project

Contrary to recent media reports, Tata Motors reaffirmed its stand on the eco-car project in Thailand. The company announced it will stick to original plans of manufacturing a sub-1,300 cc mini car by 2012 which has nothing to do with the Nano, specially for the Thailand market.

The car engineered to suit local needs, will share little or nothing in common with the present line-up.

Reports written in Thai newspapers recently suggested Tata would alter its investment plans original due to poor economic conditions. The eco-car project is a government initiative to attract car makers from around the world to set up facilities in the country and make eco-friendly cars.

Bookings for the world’s cheapest car Tata Nano, failed to live up to hype. Tata recorded 2.03 Lakh (203,000) bookings till date, which equates to one-third of the total number of forms issued and is way less than the company’s expectation of half a million bookings. Nevertheless, Tata Motors has managed to get richer by Rs.2500 Crores ($0.5 Billion) in a very short span of time.

With these bookings and especially the money, the company hopes to refinance a few debts and keep the Nano production line engaged till mid 2011. Tata’s Pantnagar plant in UP will produce around 50,000 units/yr while the new plant at Sanand in Gujarat, will boast a production capacity of 2.5 lakh units/yr, when it goes online in 2010.

Unusual pattern in bookings

According to Tata Motors, the top-end variant LX has been the customers’ favorite. The base version accounted for 20% of the bookings, the mid-level CX variant at 30% while the remaining 50% was swept by the top-end LX variant.

Prospective owners to be selected by lot

100,000 persons would be chosen from among the applicants through a computerised random selection procedure, and the announcement of their names will be made by June 2009. Deliveries will start in July 2009 and is expected to be completed in the last quarter of 2010.

Tata Motors introduces 24X7 Roadside assistance

Tata Motors has introduced its 24X7 roadside assistance scheme for its cars and utility vehicles. The car maker will no doubt have a hard time if all the taxi operators contact this assistance ;)

The 24X7 Roadside assistance will offer ‘hassle free service’ to Tata customers in the event of breakdown at any time, whether its day or night, as the name already suggests.

Speculation has it that, Tata Motors is finalising its retail plans for its British marques- Jaguar and Land Rover to set base here in India. Tata officials said that plans are underway to try and sell the cars through company-owned showrooms.

The Tata Indicruz based on the Indica Vista platform will go on sale hopefully by the end of this year in India. It has been spotted testing for well over a year now. Tata has driven thousands of miles in many continents on their latest cars- both the Indica Vista and the Indicruz, to analyze and understand their cars better, much before their entry into the market. Another derivative of the Indica Vista, the Indigo sedan we are told, will arrive at dealer showrooms by the end of June 2009.
