2009 Suzuki Alto (A-Star) launched in Australia

Suzuki wants to take on the competition in the sub-compact car segment in Australia and what a way to embark on the challenge.

Last week, Suzuki released its global city car Alto down under. For the price as low as $12,490 the car becomes the cheapest four door car in Australia. This is the price for the base model, GL manual.

A few years ago, I think the Daewoo Matiz (Chevrolet Spark to recent followers) also scored 3 stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests.

The Alto hatchback (locally called A-Star), built at Suzuki‘s Indian facility in Manesar and rebadged as the Pixo for Europe, received 46%, 25% and 39% for adult passenger protection, child protection and safety assistance performance respectively.

To give you an example of the result, the Hyundai i20, which is a class higher than the Alto received maximum five stars and its peer i10 scored four stars in its recent test.

The Euro NCAP tests assist manufacturers in knowing where it loses out to the competition. As a remedy to the low score, Suzuki immediately offers ESP as an option on one of the base models.

Many Indians believe in fate, so this option would be a joke to customers in here.

We got the feeling the Dutch were terrible at their math, but the figure published on Auto Telegraaf has been confirmed. 10 million Suzuki Altos have found homes across the globe since the beginning in 1979. 10 million!

This is a feat by no means gentle or ordinary. How many cars have reached this stage of the game? The Suzuki Alto lives to see three decades, and the sales figures continue to grind away setting new records.

More number of Suzuki Altos are present on Indian roads than any other car. Maruti sells three generations of Altos in India under the names 800, Alto and A-Star.
