Hyundai i20 has been on sale for just a month, the company says the i20 has given Hyundai a wonderful new year, amidst the economic crisis. The i20 which surprised Hyundai with phenomenal record sales, is now spreading good news to employees too. The i20 sales has gone to the extent that Hyundai was forced to recall 100 of its trainees that were discontinued in December due to the ongoing credit crisis.
After revealing pictures of the Chevrolet Beat production version last week, GM seems to have more surprises in store. At the Detroit Auto Show, General Motors revealed that its all-new Chevrolet Spark would go on sale in the United States by 2011 and would reach South Korea & Europe in early 2010. The Beat concept small car which was showcased at the New York Auto Show in 2007, has been selected to become a global car – The Spark. Sources at Chevrolet confirmed that the production car will make its world debut at March’s Geneva Motor Show. The five-door compact small car will be sold as a world car to replace the current Matiz.
Hyundai’s boxy yet once best selling car, the Santro Xing, which was sidelined after their next gen hatchback ‘i10′ was launched, seems to be back in action.
The Hyundai Santro sales figures have risen to an extent that, Hyundai is now looking to generate almost equal numbers from both, the Santro and the ‘i10′, in 2009. This comes at a time when manufacturers are cutting production and processing pink slips to their staff.
HS Lheem, Managing Director, Hyundai Motor India, said, “The Santro is doing much better than our expectations. In 2009, we are looking at almost the same overall sales number as last year or around 2.3 lakh units. Of this, Santro and ‘i10′ are expected to contribute 85,000 units each.”
Autocar UK has published a post giving more information on Fiat’s low cost brand for developing countries like ours.
The website says the low cost car will come with a “super frugal 2-cylinder engine” but nothing about the displacement or power is mentioned. Now, could this possibly be the same engine that is used on the Tata Nano ? We earlier heard that there could be a possible hand in this venture from Tata Motors.
As we reported earlier, Fiat is planning on introducing a string of low-cost cars for Western Europe to cater to the budget-conscious car buyers.
Reports suggest that a total of 3 models are being worked on, out of which 2 will be developed by Fiat’s Brazilian subsidiary. The vehicles will use the Fiat Palio and Uno platforms.
