In our market, Toyota has launched a few SUVs like the segment-leading Toyota Fortuner and Brezza rebadged Toyota Urban Cruiser. However, it has not yet expanded its reach to the mid-size SUV segment. Considering the ongoing increase in popularity of SUV models, it is not a bad choice for Toyota to fire its shoot by launching a new mid-size SUV in India. Toyota Rush, in all likelihood, will be Toyota’s first model to break into the Rs 10-20 lakh SUV segment.
Probably yes. In 2019, some reports suggested that Toyota was planning to launch the Toyota Rush in the Indian market in two or three years’ time.
Toyota Rush is currently on its second generation in the global market. The recent-gen model was launched in November 2017. Toyota is offering this model in two seating configurations, 5-seater and 7-seater versions. The seven-seater stands a higher chance of being introduced in India. It makes sense since the Japanese car brand has already got the Urban Cruiser as the standard five-seater in the compact SUV segment.
In terms of engine, the international-spec Toyota Rush is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol 6-speed manual and an engine that also powers the existing Toyota Yaris. This petrol unit is capable of producing 104 PS and 136 Nm. In terms of transmission, Toyota Rush is likely to come with a 5-speed MT and a 4-speed AT. Toyota Rush is not available with the diesel engine. Regarding the size, the Rush measures somewhere between the Hyundai Creta and Honda BR-V. Unfortunately, the Rush runs on a body-on-frame setting which is different from the regular monocoque SUVs in the market. The heavier body-on-frame structure is a major disadvantage for the fuel efficiency and driveability of the car.
In the Indonesian market, the Toyota Rush is sold at the price of around IDR 240 million (approximately Rs 11.5 lakh). If launch in India, the SUV will be priced around Rs 11 lakh to Rs 16 lakh..
