After being spied countless number of times in all its body shapes, BMW has finally taken the wraps of the new BMW 3 series and oh boy is it a looker or what! Finally, after such a long time, BMW designers have pulled a rabbit from their hat. The recent styling efforts of the 7 series and the 5 series have been on the conservative side to appeal to the masses. But that is not the case with the new 3 series. Its back to its roots (and the Chris Bangle era) – Love it or Hate it.

2012 BMW 3 Series

BMW has adopted a very aggressive design for the new 3 series. The most important task for the design team was to get the new 3 series DESIGN in line with its elder cousins, but at the same time make it look like the sportiest sedan in its segment. However, while doing so the designers have inadvertently made the best looking 3 series ever!

Rumor has it that with the new 3 Series, BMW has gone the Audi way – it has brought the 3 Series design and interiors on par with the 5 Series. This is the same strategy Audi has adopted wherein lot of components are shared between its portfolio.

The new 3 Series will feature a similar exterior design to the 5 Series. Spy shots have revealed that a lot of interior components of the new 3 Series are taken from her elder sister.

BMW F30IndianAutosBlog.com is told by sources that four variants are under discussion for India for the next generation BMW 3 Series.

Codenamed F30, the next generation 3 Series is bigger than the outgoing model and will debut at Frankfurt Motor Show next month. Shown on the left is a snap uploaded by a BMW aficionado taken while the car was filming for advertisement campaigns.

Assembly of the new 3 Series at the Chennai facility should begin by late Q1 for a Q3 launch.

These variants will form the next generation 3 Series troop -

Petrol – 320i (2.0-liter – 152hp) , 328i (3 liter straight six producing between 200-230 hp)
Diesel – (same 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with two outputs) – 320d (175hp), 318d (146hp)

The range topping 328i will brim with gadgets like HUD (Heads Up Display), Reverse guide camera, electrically operated sunroof, iPhone/Smart phone compatible audio unit, etc.

Considering the rage for diesels, the 318d will be the new starting point/volume mopper of the 3 Series range offering customers with higher fuel economy. Likewise the 320i, tuned for economy, will offer petrol customers with a basic car with a powerful BMW badge.

Corporate edition models, like on the current 3 Series plan, will come at a later date.

Next generation BMW F30 leaks – Images Inside

The 2012 BMW 3 Series has been captured on camera as it was driven on public roads during its advertisement filming. The ad shooting was set in Spain while an eagle eyed BMW fan snapped it, from a height, captured the uncamouflaged vehicle.

The design ideology is clearly copied from the 5 Series. If not for some character lines, the new BMW 3 Series (codename – F30) will be termed as a minimized 5 Series.

BMW F30The ad film car has features like corona rings with full LED treatment. The current 3 Series lacks the dramatic styling or the panache of the replacement you see here. This is a step forward for BMW.

Until the all-new C-Class and the next generation A4 arrive in the market a few years down the line, the BMW 3 Series will have the freshest interior and exterior. We believe this will be the biggest selling point.

BMW also plans to improve rear seat comfort by lengthening the wheelbase and providing better seats. The 3 Series is not your car for 8 hour journeys but the improvement is necessary if the car wants to make inroads in countries like India where back seat travel is frequent.

Will BMW India bring in the 3 Series long wheelbase edition? That will make the ultimate corporate edition model for tourism companies and hotels.

The new 3 Series has generation firsts too. It will feature indicators on the outside mirrors.

Video: 2012 BMW 3 Series caught

CarsSpyPhotos.com has scooped up a video of the 2012 BMW 3 Series being tested on the roads of Germany. The current generation 3 series (known as E90 and E92) is expected to say sayonara sometime this October. Replacing it will be the bigger next generation 3 Series codenamed F30.

The new 3 Series will share the more conservative design language that BMW has adopted. It will have a much slimmer look, and sharp lines with squat proportions and short rear overhangs. This will not be a complete revolutionary model but more of an evolutionary change.

A range of turbocharged four and six cylinder mills are expected to do their duty under the bonnet. BMW claims that the new 3 Series will combine superb driving pleasure with an added touch of fuel efficiency. The performance version of the 3 Series – M3 is expected to ditch V8 power in favor of a twin-turbo inline-six sporting about 450 horsepower.

International debut of the new 3 Series is expected in spring 2012. In that case assembly of the F30 at the Chennai facility should commence in the first quarter of 2012.

Rendered – 2012 BMW 3 Series

As we draw closer to its launch, the 2012 BMW 3 Series has been rendered again. After the launch of the Corporate Edition models, sales of the 3 Series picked up in India. What is interesting is despite being the cheapest model in the Indian portfolio, the more expensive 5 Series outsells the 3 Series by some margin. In January, the 5 outsold the 3er by almost 2:1 ratio. To  [ Read More ]
