Day Three – 2012 Tata Nano driving performance

2012 Tata Nano frontIf you were a bit disappointed that Tata Motors has not done much to exteriors and interiors, I am pleased to say that most of the startling changes are to the mechanicals.

So buckle up to find out:

What powers the 2012 Nano?

Tata Motors did not change the capacity of the Nano’s engine. But they have tweaked it to produce a little more power while being kinder to your wallet. The 624 cc, twin cylinder engine now produces 38 PS instead of 35 PS. At the same time, Tata Motors obsession with ‘25kmpl’ has affected the Nano as well. The torque figure has also increased but only by 0.4kgm (4 Nm)

Start the engine and you notice reduced vibrations when the engine is idling. Put it in gear and you notice the clutch is significantly lighter than the older version. Once on the road, you feel that all those changes in the engine are not just marketing material for the brochure.

Day 2 – 2012 Tata Nano Interiors

Did you like the exterior review of the 2012 Nano? Well then it’s time to open the door and dig deeper. Tata Motors claim that the Nano is 21% roomier than the Maruti 800. Although, that claim is hard to verify, I am pleasantly surprised at the amount of space that the Nano has to offer.

Open the door and you find the minimalistic interiors that the 2012 Tata Nano has to offer. Considering I got a top model, I had a three spoke steering wheel. The lower variants have just a 2 spoke one. Behind the steering wheel, you find the indicator and wiper stalk where they HAVE to be – right for the Indicators and left for the wiper Period!

First Impressions: 2012 Tata Nano

2012 Tata NanoThe Tata Nano, once upon a time the cheapest car in the world, may not have been as successful as Tata Motors hoped for. Controversy was once its byword, politicians, environmentalists and rival car companies had complaints even before it landed in showrooms.

As the Nano waded through controversies, it was met with intense criticism as a handful of Nanos went up in flames. Despite the company reassuring customers of its robustness and offering free checkups and safety tool fitments, the Nano was not a safe car to the eyes of the general public.

Tata has managed to put that ghost to rest, but the aftermath of the disaster is giving the little wonder and its parents sleepless nights.

Unless you have been vacationing on the moon, you must know that the Tata Nano has received upgrades. But surely the question on your mind is What’s New? Looks pretty much the same ain’t it?

You’re right and to some extent wrong as well. The looks haven’t been changed much. But there is more than what meets the eye.

  • 25.4 kmpl

Oh yes! Tata Motors obsession with the number ’25 kmpl’ has rubbed over the Nano as well. The boffins at Tata Motors have squeezed 25Kmpl from Nano’s tiny 624 cc engine.

  • 3 PS more POWER!

While increasing the mileage, somehow Tata Motors have also managed to increase the power rating on the engine. Earlier, the engine used to produce 35 PS but now its produces 38 PS of POWER!

But thanks to BurnYourFuel/Tata Nano Youtube channel, we can now bring you the TV Ad that you will soon see on your telly.

Just like the old ad, this one too focuses on the various features on the Nano. Tata has also worked on the suspension, AC and turning radius. Our speculation of 25 kmpl was also bang on!

More importantly, just like the old ad, this one too melts your heart. Don’t believe us? Have a look yourself.
