Now Hyundai recall the Sonata in US and Korea

YF Sonata – recalled in US and Korea

If there is one word, we are getting used to lately, it is “Recall”. Hyundai is the latest.

Yesterday, Hyundai have recalled 47300 Sonata’s in Korea and US. No problems in India as the model recalled is not sold here. Rather, the model “YF Sonata” has not been introduced in India yet. Just for the record, the YF Sonata also bagged the IIHS Top Safety Award for 2011 in US. The award is presented to the car that scores a good rating in front, side, rear and roll over crashes.

I must admit, this comes at a time, when Hyundai is actually doing well in the US. Considering Toyota’s problems, one of the biggest beneficiary in terms of sales in US is Hyundai. Of the 47300 vehicles recalled, only 1300 vehicles are from the US. That is a negligible number, but certainly one that the US market would not discount in the wake of recent trends.

Video – Hyundai’s 2.4L Theta 2 GDI

The engine explained in this video is available on the new Hyundai Sonata sold in the US. This engine took Hyundai 46 months to develop and cost them $145 million!

This is a 4-cylinder engine with gasoline direct injection, dual valve timing and variable induction system. It can make about 200hp and can be bolted to either a 6-speed auto or manual transmission.

A home run – Hyundai i40 images and details

Images of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata has leaked on to the internet. Expected to come with i40 badges in Europe, the i40 is arguably the best looking Hyundai to this date.

Its profile is somewhere in between a sedan and a coupe. Inspired by the sexy Mercedes CLS, you can’t point out one design element that’s common between the two. In India, the i40 will take the Accord-Camry segment to an all new level. If they price it in the Laura-Jetta segment, it is so going to be a steal for that price.

The 2.4 liter Theta II engine with GDI (gasoline direct injection) technology produces about 200 hp. A 2.0 liter petrol engine should be powering in the entry-level model.

Whether or not the 2.2 liter ‘R’ with 204 hp and the Euro 5 emissions standards busting diesel engine will make it to India is anyone’s guess. Even a Lambda V6 engine giving out about 250 hp is in the rumor mill. This could be a perfect candidate to eat into the Skoda Superb V6′ and Honda Accord V6′ pie.

6-speed manual or automatic transmissions will be available. A level of equipment is going to be up there – panoramic glass roof, stop-start technology and paddle shifts on the steering wheel will be bestowed on the new Sonata.

The Hyundai Sonata YF/i40 goes on sale in Korea in October andh in the North American and European markets by early 2010.

Spied – New Hyundai Sonata YF/i40 shots

The Hyundai Sonata YF’s side profile was picked up when it was undergoing some kind of testing in Hyundai’s facility. But thanks to the extra large watermarks, it looks more like an ad campaign by the owners of the photo.

The tilting shoulder line and the pointed windows adds a unique element to the otherwise slopey design of the i40.

A smaller image of the Sonata’s front fascia also reveals class, but we hope the extra chrome on the grille is reserved only for the top-end variant.

Spied – Hyundai i40 front fascia

This part by part display of the Hyundai i40 is agonizing. First we found just the bumper, then the headlights along with it, and now we have the whole front fascia.

The nearing Hyundai i40’s front fascia was exhibited in what looks like a science and technology fair. The “active air flap system” on the i40’s grill is likely to bust some fancy moves to help the engine or the cooling system.

Filled with wires and electronics, this definitely is not how the production i40’s dashboard would look like. Last time we showed you the i40’s dashboard, it was blurry, not this time though.

Leftlane news has published a clean shot of the interior of the upcoming i40/Sonata YF. The dashboard has a range of shapes and objects, symmetric and non symmetric. The A.C vents is how chocolate would dissolve in hot milk. The tacho and speedo dials are like the big spot lights used in prisons to catch escaping inmates!

Hyundai Sonata YF/i40 breaks cover at Detroit Show next year

Its Official!

The much awaited Hyundai i40/Sonata YF will be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show next year. Interestingly the dates of the show (January 11-24) overlap with the Delhi Auto Expo. It will be interesting to see if Hyundai displays a model here for us.

The new Hyundai i40 has been spied many times, we’ve brought scores of spyshots and renderings. We’ll have our version of the car up in the course of next week.

The Hyundai Sonata YF will make it to India next year. Its futuristic design will go down well with Indian consumers. It must be priced correctly, at the end of the day let us remember this is a Hyundai and in India, it makes small cars.

The base model will use a 4-cylinder engine direct injection technology will be utilized. The engine options of the next Sonata has been discussed in depth here before.

Call it the i40 or call it the Sonata YF, it looks gorgeous. The new Hyundai Sonata was spied by someone on vacation in Arabia. Only a part of the car had camouflage on it.

The little quarter glass panel at the rear and the elongated headlamps are the finest and most striking features of this car to me

These are the most revealing shots of the i40 yet, which will come to India next year. We could expect it to be present at the Auto Expo. The interiors of the Sonata YF were brought to you not once but twice. The i40’s headlamps were shown separately in a post. The car’s stylish bumper took center stage a while ago. Spied – First image of Hyundai i40 rear undisguised

Based on what we’ve heard and what we can make out from this low-resolution picture, the rear portion of the Sonata YF is tidy, sharp, fluid, poised, brisk, funky, cool and a whole lot of other things.

Did the design engineers of the Hyundai i40 derive all their inspiration from the Indian Ocean?

Even the spy shots portray how the car flows from bumper to bumper. Would I be wrong if I said this is the most stunning car Hyundai’s ever made?

We’re sick of seeing these spy shots, we’ve been treated only to spy shots of the Hyundai i40 over the last few months. Weeks ago, one photograph of the interior showed how Hyundai is moving away from the world of hard plastics towards a modern and cleanly laid out dashboard and central console design.

With this spy shot, Hyundai blog comments the plastic quality will be similar to the Audi A4. Now, that’s great news!
