Fiat’s new small car to be based on existing platform

The new small car from Fiat could have Multiair technology and beautiful look

Rajeev Kapoor, CEO of Fiat India during the launch of new Punto variants today has revealed that the company is not developing a new platform for its small car scheduled for 2012.

Speaking to reporters here in Mumbai, Kapoor said the company is relying on existing platforms (for eg – new Uno, 500) to bring out the small car which is at least two years away.

Another bit of information that’s come out today is that the new car could have Fiat’s Multiair technology fitted to its engine which leads to fewer emissions and higher fuel economy.

During the Auto Expo earlier in the year, Kapoor said the new small car will have nothing to do with the Topolino brand of compacts developed for Europe.

Rendering – Fiat’s new small car for India

SRK’s version of the compact car hints at heavy dependence on existing models

Scheduled for a 2012 release, Fiat’s new small car will be placed under the Palio in the company’s Indian portfolio. It could be the company’s entry-level car in other markets.

While we don’t know about the platform and if Tata will utilize the mechanicals for their cars, we do know that the car will be compact and styled in Italy. Fiat India CEO Mr.Rajeev Kapoor told IAB during the Auto Expo that the designs of this small car were yet to be finalized. He did not divulge any information on the model letting us speculate as much as we could!

Another interesting development is the introduction of the 2-cylinder engine by Fiat at the on-going Geneva Motor Show. The 900cc 8V Twin-Air engine will also be offered in the naturally aspirated form. Producing 64bhp, it looks like an apt motor for the new small car.

No BS4 plans for Fiat Palio; Is it heading to the grave?

We will undoubtedly miss India’s first hot hatch as Fiat has no BS4 plans for it

We’ve said enough about the Fiat Palio on IAB. We were eagerly anticipating the launch of the refreshed model with slightly more powerful engines. Our anticipation is a far cry from reality as Fiat dropped a bomb shell when talking to DNA India’ correspondent.

Rajeev Kapoor, chief executive officer, Fiat India -

There will be no upgrades for Palio and the current product will continue to sell.

The company spokesperson reaffirmed the decision by saying there was no plan to upgrade the engines to comply to BS4 norms. The Palio is one of the best small cars money can buy in India. However, India fails to agree. Just 50 odd Palios are sold in our country every month, beating some of the luxury cars by a hefty margin.

The Fiat Palio can be bought with a 1.1 or 1.6-liter petrol engine, or a 1.3-liter diesel engine. Fiat is aiming to convert customers looking for Palio in to buying its new bet – the Punto.

While the next generation Palio according to some reports is more than a year away, we wonder if Fiat will ever bring back the Palio name into India’s main cities.

Fiat 500 gets Multijet 2 diesel engine in UK

competition-tilting specifications preserves excitement in the Fiat 500

The Fiat 500 is now offered with a more fuel efficient, less polluting and segment topping 1.3-liter Multijet 2 engine in the UK. The new engine produced 95 bhp, 20bhp more than the outgoing engine and 200Nm of torque. This almost transforms the Fiat 500 into a Fiat 500 Abarth!

Imagine – 95 bhp in a car that’s the size of a beer mug.

The new engine comes fitted with Start&Stop system that hibernates the engine at the traffic lights. The result of the extra power is understood when you step on the pedal. 100kmph comes in just 10.7 seconds, almost two seconds quicker than the outgoing model.

The new 500 is capable of a top speed of 112mph.

Andrew Humberstone, managing director, Fiat Group Automobiles UK -

This remarkable new diesel engine will add even greater excitement to the fantastic 500 range, but without adding to the cost of ownership. In fact, with greater fuel economy and lower emissions, everyone will benefit from this new variant.

It is not only power and torque that’s improved. The defining factor, if you’re the Indian customer – the mileage, has also inched upwards.

On a combined cycle, the new 500 moved from 67.3 mpg to 72.4 mpg. CO2 emission levels have also been reduced from 110 g/km to 104 g/km, credit to the Start&Stop system and the DPF particulate filter, which is usually found on high end cars.

Fiat’s low cost car here by 2012

Fiat small carThe small car, bigger than the Fiat 500, is likely have four doors and lots of space

At the Auto Expo last week, Fiat India CEO Rajeev Kapoor told IAB that Fiat will unveil a compact car in India in the next few years. The small car Fiat is developing for India will be smaller than the Palio and targets buyers who are on the hunt for something cheaper than the existing entry-level model.

Kapoor said the new small car will have nothing to do with the Topolino brand of small cars developed for Europe. He added the design of the car will be finalized and takes shape in Italy. Kapoor insisted the design has not yet been frozen.

The Ranjangoan plant capacity utilization is expected to reach 80 percent by 2012 and the only way to get there is produce a high-volume vehicle like the new small car which could give Fiat a fighting chance to regain market share.

Leaked – Image of New Fiat Uno

Fiat-Uno-2010-1New Fiat Uno arrives in Brazil this March; Follows in other countries afterward

We’ve been following the new Fiat Uno all along with leaked images of its components, renderings and spyshots. But here’s the real deal for the Uno fan – a head-on spy shot of an undisguised Fiat Uno which could make it to India in the future.

Fiat’s line-up of small cars in India ends with the Palio and the company is in the process of designing a completely new small car from scratch in its Italian HQ. To fill the gap and to make the positioning easier, the new Uno could emerge as a likely candidate, but no one in the Indian camp is talking about it yet.

The new Uno looks plain but solid. There are three passages provided on the right of the fascia, which is never seen before on a Fiat. The bumpers are big and the headlamps extending backwards resembles the Doblo.

The rear view mirrors are similar to the ones used on the Fiat Punto. We expect plenty of components from existing Fiat cars to play crucial roles on the Uno. The absence of chrome or sophisticated styling reminds us of the car’s low price tag. Most likely, this Fiat will likely form the entry point in many new markets.

Rendering – 2011 Fiat Palio

Fiat Palio 2011Fiat Palio 2011-1

The Fiat Palio facelift and will be among the exhibits at the Auto Expo next week. Since the model has been on the Indian market for more than ten years, Fiat might be contemplating on replacing it with a newer model or position the next generation model between the Palio and Punto.

This rendering of the next gen Palio is more of scaled down Punto than a modernized Palio. Fiat could use the familiarity of the Punto design to its advantage while designing the next Palio. Skoda, Honda, Toyota are few of them who carried this out neatly.

You could expect Multiair engines and Multijet diesels on the future Palio. Electric and hybrid versions can also not be ruled out.

Spied – Improved Fiat Linea for India

Fiat_Linea_T-Jet-indiaThe Fiat Linea Mk II (unconfirmed) will get improved paint finish, NVH and drivability

The revamped version of the Fiat Linea was caught testing by chaps at Motoroids. The improved Linea will address complaints customers have registered since the time the car went on sale in January this year.

The new Linea will produce lesser vibrations, thanks to new engine mounts. The ECU has also been tweaked to return better gas mileage. The gear ratios have also been altered to generate better torque (better low speed drivability?)

Inside the Linea, front seat frame has been tweaked, and durability issues in the dashboard plastics, seat lever and the boot release lever are now sorted. Sound insulation, it seems, has also been improved especially on the diesel variant.

The bonnet for the new variant (1.4 T-jet) and the existing one will use a new mechanism. The Air conditioning unit has also been fine tuned to operate producing less noise. The paint quality also seems to have been looked into and Fiat could give the Linea a glossy finish by applying lacquer coats.

We expect this Linea to be present at the Auto Expo next year in blue color.

Alfa Romeo, Maserati to join Linea 1.6 at Fiat stand in Auto Expo?

maserati_logo_quattroporteAlfas and Maseratis greet guest at the Auto Expo next month

Carwale is reporting Fiat will bring cars from the Alfa Romeo and Maserati stable to the Auto Expo next month. Fiat will exhibit a new dark blue color Linea along with 1.6-liter Multijet engine and 1.4-liter T-Jet engine variants in its booth.

The above cars will be accompanied by the facelifted Palio, a Fiat 500 and the Bravo, sources add.

Fiat is looking at amplifying its powertrain instead of its portfolio. It plans to rebuild the Fiat brand by selling many variants of the Palio, Punto and Linea as possible in India. We have also learned Fiat is looking to bring commercial vehicles and the first model that comes to mind is the Palio strada pickup truck.

We have to wait till the Auto Expo to learn more on these models.

Fiat Palio hatch ‘Sporting’ to follow pickup and sedan?

fiat-strada-sporting-pickupThe Fiat Strada Sporting comes with special paint and tweaked suspension

Fiat is seriously bringing on some heat in Brazil. They’ve just revealed a sport version of the Palio pickup truck (name: strada sporting) in Brazil with masked headlamps, special red paint, body kit and 16-inch alloy wheels.

Don’t think the ’sporting’ version is all show. The suspension has been lowered and as a result, you get tighter handling. The interiors have a rush of uniqueness with red stitching on steering wheel, drilled pedals and red safety belts.

The Strada Sport comes with a 1.8-liter engine good for 115hp.

Fiat Linea T-Jet coming to Auto Expo 2010

fiat-linea-2009-t-jetT-Jet is more than just a badge with chrome. Its mental.

The puny petrol engine on the Fiat Linea isn’t helping sales scoot along so in comes the mental T-Jet variant.

The turbocharged 1.4 liter petrol engine develops 120 PS@5000 rpm and 206Nm of torque right from 1750rpm.

The Linea T-Jet will accelerate from 0-100 kph in a staggeringly low 9.2 seconds and will run till 200kph. The Linea will be the first petrol car under 10 lakh rupees to come with a turbocharger.

Apart from the racy engine, the Linea will come with features like Hill Holder function (for hill starts where the car would automatically brake to stop it rolling backwards when you take your foot off to accelerate), Rain sensing wipers, Automatic headlamps and Reverse parking sensors.
