Speaking to the media at the launch of the new Hyundai Verna, YK Koo, MD & CEO, Hyundai Motor India Ltd, said the company is yet to decide the name of their upcoming compact car.

New Hyundai small car will not be called Hyundai Santro
The company has confirmed that their new small car is slated for a launch in the second half of 2018.

At the time of the Hyundai Verna's launch last month, the company revealed that a new compact car was under development scheduled to arrive in the second half of 2018. Although multiple outlets have reported that the Santro name will be brought back, the same has not been confirmed by Hyundai. Koo said that the company was yet to "finalize" the name of the product.

The engine powering the hatchback could be the 1.2 L Kappa petrol carried over from the Grand i10. The big news regarding the powertrain will be the introduction of an AMT. It is being developed by Hyundai in-house, and the upcoming small car will be used as a vessel to debut the new two-pedal technology. In dimensions, the car will be bigger and wider than the Santro offering greater cabin as well as boot space.

The new Hyundai small car will be sandwiched between the Eon and Grand i10 and could take on some crossover cues. Its major rivals will include the Tata Tiago and Maruti Celerio. A starting price of under INR 4 lakhs (ex-showroom) is expected.
