Market launch expected to take place in August.

A third gen Hyundai Verna test mule has been snapped alongside its closest rival, the Honda City, in Chennai by reader Manoj Prabhakaran. The new Verna is still in its testing phase but is expected in showrooms in August.

Drive mode select, proximity key with push button start, soft-touch materials, 60/40 folding rear seat and the new Motor-Driven Power Steering (MDPS) could get passed down to the Verna from the 2017 Accent.

The whole body is wrapped in canvas, but it contains no secrets. The exterior design will be nearly the same as the 2017 Hyundai Accent for North America. It adopts Hyundai’s latest iteration of the Fluidic Sculpture 2.0, looking more angular and sharper than the flowing, curvy lines of the outgoing Verna.

At the tape, the 2017 Verna’s dimensions are likely to be similar to the Accent, measuring 4,385 mm in length, 1,729 mm in width and 1,450 mm in height, and having a wheelbase of 2,580 mm. The Accent has 10 mm longer wheelbase, is 29 mm wider and has its overall length increased by 15 mm. Passenger volume is up by 36 litres while boot volume is up by 16 litres.

The interior was spied last time, revealing a dual tone beige/black colour combo for the dashboard and seat upholstery. It has a floating dashboard similar to that of the i20, housing a 5- to 7-inch touchscreen AVN unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, new instrument dials and multi-info display, automatic ‘Clean Air’ climate control, rear HVAC vent and increased knee room courtesy of the longer wheelbase.

6 airbags, Electronic Stability Control, Vehicle Stability Management, Traction Control, and ABS are likely to be carried over from the Accent to the Verna.

The Verna is reported to carry over the outgoing car’s engine lineup, which include the 1.4- and 1.6-litre N/A petrol and turbodiesel engines paired with 5-speed/6-speed manual options. The automatic variants could drop the 4-speed AT for the Hyundai Creta’s 6-speed unit. It is to be noted that the Accent’s 6-speed automatic gearbox has been redesigned for better performance and weighs 2 kg lower.

Expect fuel mileage to be slightly more than the current Verna’s 24.8 km/l (1.4L CRDi turbodiesel), 23.9 km/l (1.6L CRDi turbodiesel), 17.4 km/l for the (1.4L MPI petrol) and 17.01 km/l for the (1.6 MPI petrol), or much more if it comes with mild hybrid technology.
