Suzuki Ignis could be exported to South Asia from India - Report

Gurugram facility to cater to some export markets in the long run.

The Maruti Ignis finally went on sale in India yesterday with prices starting at INR 4.59 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). With the Indian launch complete, Maruti Suzuki India will gear up for exports of the car to markets in Asia.

After Japan, MSIL's Gurugram facility is the second production base for the Ignis.

Speaking to the Economic Times, C V Raman, Executive Director (Engineering) at Maruti Suzuki, said that the Maruti Ignis will be produced at the Gurugram facility in India mostly to cater the domestic demand, but there are plans to export the car to markets in South Asia and South East Asia later on. Though Raman did not specify the markets, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam could be in the Suzuki Ignis' radar. Sri Lanka and Nepal are assumed as favourites as well.

The Maruti Ignis is available in four trim levels: Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha. Features like body coloured door mirrors and door handles, tilt steering, front power windows, auto power down driver power window, ABS with EBD and dual front airbags are standard.

LED projector headlamps with daytime running lights, alloy wheels, power folding and adjustable door mirrors, dual-tone dashboard, Smart Play infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, steering mounted audio controls, push start, remote keyless entry, rear parking sensor, reversing camera, rear defogger and rear wiper are available in high-end grades.

The Ignis made in India is available with 1.2-litre VVT petrol and 1.3-litre DDIS diesel engines, along with 5-speed manual and 5-speed automated manual transmissions.

The Maruti Ignis is based on the Maruti Baleno's lightweight and highly rigid new-generation platform. The mini crossover measures 3,700 mm in length, 1,690 mm in width and 1,595 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,435 mm and a ground clearance of 180 mm.

It's available with a 1.2-litre VVT petrol engine that produces 61 kW at 6,000 rpm and 113 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm and a 1.3-litre DDIS diesel engine that develops 55.2 kW at 4,000 rpm and 190 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm. Both engines can be specified with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed automated manual transmission.
