Maruti Baleno RS with Boosterjet engine to launch in early 2017.
At the media preview of Maruti Ignis, Head of Maruti Suzuki R&D Division CV Raman, divulged to IndianAutosBlog that the market response towards the Boosterjet engine powering the upcoming Baleno RS will decide the future of RS models.
Raman said:
We're doing this for the first time (RS with new engine option). We want to see the progress of Boosterjet and the acceptance of that, and will see how we'll take it forward from there.
Currently, RS models only have a sportier exterior and interior package, while the powertrain is identical to the respective regular model. Should Maruti manage to push good volumes of the Baleno RS, Maruti could expand the RS lineup with more products powered by a Boosterjet engine. Its success will also determine the fate of the entry-level hot hatch segment in India, so expect other manufacturers to pay close attention to the Baleno RS's sales.
Other than just RS models, Maruti could also introduce the Boosterjet engine in regular models. One such product tipped to feature Boosterjet is the Maruti Vitara Brezza, which is currently sold without a petrol option. However, even naturally aspirated units such as the 1.4L K14B and 1.5L M15A are reportedly being considered, although both aren't as fuel efficient as the Boosterjet, we reckon.
