Will rival the Ford EcoSport and the Maruti Vitara Brezza.

HMIL presented the Hyundai Carlino (Hyundai HND-14) concept at Auto Expo 2016 to preview its future compact crossover positioned below the Hyundai Creta. The compact utility vehicle concept was designed in Namyang, South Korea, and looks a lot different from Hyundai's latest production models that share a common family design.

The Hyundai Carlino will be available with the Hyundai i20's 1.0-litre T-GDi petrol engine and 1.4-litre CRDi diesel engine when it launches in 2018.

Citing sources, a new report from Autocar India says that the Hyundai Carlino concept's production version will be powered by a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine instead of a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine expected previously. The company thinks that the strong mid-range torque delivered by the turbocharged petrol engine will be crucial for the compact SUV.

The engine will be the same 998 cc T-GDi three-cylinder unit powering the Euro-spec Hyundai i20. Additionally, the i20's 1.4-litre U2 CRDi four-cylinder diesel engine will be available.

While the Hyundai Creta will continue to compete with bigger SUVs, the Hyundai Carlino will be pitted against the sub-4 metre models like the Maruti Vitara Brezza, the upcoming Tata Nexon and the Ford EcoSport. It will be launched in India in 2018 and around 60% of the car's R&D work will be by Hyundai Motor India's team.
