Expected to debut in H2 2017.

The current, fifth generation BMW M5 (BMW F10) is about to be succeeded by the sixth generation BMW M5 (BMW F90) next year. A speculative rendering from motor.es shows how the 2017 BMW M5 may look like.

2017 BMW M5 (BMW F90) rendering
The next-gen BMW M5 is expected to be around 100 kg lighter than the current BMW M5.

The next-gen BMW M5 will be based on the company’s CLAR (CLuster ARchitecture) rear-wheel drive platform that currently underpins the sixth-gen BMW 7 Series (BMW G11/BMW G12). Thanks to the substantial usage of lightweight materials such as carbon-fibre, magnesium and high-strength steel in the chassis, the redesigned BMW M5 (BMW F90) is expected to be around 100 kg lighter than the current BMW M5 (BMW F10).

The current BMW M5 is available only in sedan body style, but BMW did offer an estate version previously. It has been reported that BMW is strongly considering an estate version for the next-gen BMW M5 so as to compete with the upcoming Mercedes-AMG E63 Estate and the Audi RS 6 Avant.

BMW M5 engine
The 2017 BMW M5 will be powered by a revised version of the 4.4-litre M TwinPower Turbo engine of the current model.

The 2017 BMW M5 will be powered by a revised version of the 4.4-litre M TwinPower Turbo twin-turbo V8 petrol engine that will probably produce around 600 hp. Power will be channeled to the wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. In a first, the next-gen M5 will be available in rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations, with the latter being optional. The all-new M5 should debut in the second half of 2017.
