The first video teaser of the next-generation BMW 5 Series has been released, ahead of its world debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show this month. It could be digitally unveiled in the coming days.
Recent spyshots of the new 5 Series have revealed an exterior that is heavily influenced by the current 7 Series. It’s an evolutionary step up from the outgoing model, retaining a certain familiarity yet looking contemporary at the same time. It is expected to be slightly longer and wider than the outgoing model for a more commanding presence.
The new 5 Series will be based on the Cluster Architecture (CLAR) sourced from the 7 Series. It is reported to be 100 kg lighter than the outgoing model, thanks to the intensive use of aluminum and other lightweight materials. Reports suggest that BMW will not incorporate Carbon Core in the body construction due to costs.
The engine lineup will include a wide range of four- and six-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel motors. The four-cylinder engines will be 2.0-litre TwinPower units available in various states of tune; the most powerful being the 530i petrol variant. 3.0L inline six-cylinder engine options will be offered in the 540i petrol as well as 530d and 540d diesel variants. The range-topping M550i will pack a 4.4L Twin Turbo V8 engine.
