Could get a 4-speed or 6-speed torque converter unit.

Zigwheels reports that Hyundai will introduce an automatic variant of the Elite i20 in the festive season, thus widening the appeal of the former ICOTY (Indian Car Of The Year).

This is expected to widen the appeal of the Hyundai i20, which is presently available only with 5- and 6-speed MTs.

Hyundai will not offer a cost-effective AMT or a fuel-saving CVT, but rather a regular torque converter system offered in models like the Hyundai Grand i10 and Hyundai Creta.

The automatic variant is likely to pack the 1.2L VTVT petrol engine from the regular manual variant. Given that the same engine is fitted with a 4-speed automatic in the Grand i10, the i20 could also feature the same transmission. Otherwise, Hyundai could source the 6-speed unit from the Creta for better fuel efficiency and highway drivability.

Currently, the i20 is the only hatchback in its segment that isn't available with an automatic option, while the Honda Jazz and Maruti Baleno are available with CVT options and the VW Polo is equipped with a 7-speed DSG in the top-end GT TSI variant.
