From July 2016, the name of all BMW plug-in hybrid vehicles will bear the 'iPerformance' suffix. Other visual indicators of these models include BMW i logo on the front side panel, BMW i-style blue elements in the kidney grille and wheel hubs, and an eDrive logo on the C-pillar.

The plug-in hybrid variant of the sixth generation BMW 7 Series (G11/G12) makes use of a 2.0-litre TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder petrol engine paired in combination with an electric motor that generates 70 kW (95 hp) and 250 Nm of torque.

The plug-in hybrid system produces 240 kW (326 hp) and 500 Nm of torque, and the power is sent to the wheels via an 8-speed Steptronic transmission. The long-wheelbase version can be had with the xDrive permanent all-wheel drive system.

The pure electric range of the BMW 740e iPerformance and BMW740Le iPerformance is 40 km (25 miles), while the BMW 740Le xDrive iPerformance's all-wheel drive system brings this figure slightly down to 37 km (23 miles). The BMW 7 Series plug-in hybrid, irrespective of the wheelbase and drivetrain layout choice, can be specified with anti-dazzle BMW Laserlight.
