Subaru has unveiled the all-new 2017 Subaru Impreza sedan at the 2016 New York International Auto Show. Here’s how the fifth generation Subaru Impreza sedan compared with the fourth generation Subaru Impreza sedan.
Body and Chassis
The 2017 Subaru Impreza marks the debut of the Subaru Global Platform in a production vehicle. The new platform has increased the rigidity of the body and chassis by 70% and 100% respectively. The suspension system has been substantially improved, while the centre of gravity has been lowered by 5 mm. The torsional rigidity has been increased by 70%.
The 2017 Subaru Impreza sedan features hawk-eye headlights and new hexagonal grille that’s more upright, resculpted hood, sleek mirrors and redesigned bumpers and tail lamps. The new exterior revolves around Subaru’s Wide and Low theme. With the length, width and height at 4,625 mm, 1,777 mm and 1,455 mm respectively, the all-new Subaru Impreza sedan is 40 mm longer, 37 mm wider and sits 10 mm lower compared to the older Subaru Impreza sedan. The wheelbase has been increased from 2,645 mm to 2,670 mm in the 2017 model.
The interior has been drastically improved from the previous generation. The steering wheel, pedals, dashboard, instrument panel, centre console, gearshift lever, centre stack and door panels have been redesigned. The 7-inch touchscreen display for the infotainment system has been replaced by an 8-inch touchscreen display. The new infotainment system features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration capability.
Engine & Transmission
The new generation Subaru Impreza continues with the FB 2.0-litre Boxer engine. However the engine has been heavily revised with Subaru stating that around 80% of the parts are revamped. The naturally aspirated engine now produces 152 hp (+4 hp), and is mated to the Lineartronic continuously variable transmission, which has a 7-speed manual mode. The noise and vibration of the engine and transmission have been considerably reduced, claims Subaru.
