The Maruti Vitara Brezza, when launched next month, will primarily rival the Ford EcoSport and the Mahindra TUV300. However, price wise, buyers of the the top-end variants of the Vitara Brezza will consider entry-level variants of larger compact SUVs such as the Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster (the facelifted Duster will be launched next month), and Maruti’s own S-Cross.

On the dimension front, while the Vitara Brezza is shortest in overall length and wheelbase, it manages to outsize the Creta and S-Cross in terms of width and height. The Duster continues to be the largest compact SUV in every dimension. Even in terms of boot space, the Duster outclasses rivals with a 475 liter boot, whereas at 353 liters, the S-Cross’s trunk is a mere 25 liters larger than its smaller sibling.

When it comes to ground clearance, the Vitara Brezza comes second with 198 mm, just a shade under the Duster’s 205 mm. The S-Cross has the lowest ground clearance at 180 mm while the Creta is in-between at 190 mm.

The Vitara Brezza will primarily have the Mahindra TUV300 and Ford EcoSport in its crosshair.

Coming to the powertrain, the S-Cross and Vitara Brezza are powered by the same 1.3-liter DDiS diesel engine in the same state of tune: 90 PS and 200 Nm. Maruti has not released the kerb weight of the Vitara Brezza, but on the S-Cross, this engine delivers 74.68 PS/tonne and 23.65 km/l, the highest in segment.

The Creta’s 1.4-liter CRDi motor delivers 90 PS and 220 Nm, but with a 6-speed gearbox and returns 21.38 km/l, whereas the Duster’s 1.5-liter K9K dCi unit produces 85 PS and 200 Nm while returning 20.45 km/l.

Finally, coming to price, the Creta and Duster are priced within INR 30,000-70,000 from each other, whereas the S-Cross, post its recent price cut, costs between INR 7.79-10.29 lakhs, ex-Showroom, New Delhi.

After the price cut, s-cross looks a better proposition. But given the dimensions, Brezza should be lighter than the S-cross and therefore have better power to weight ratio. So even the economy should be similar if not better than the S-cross. So everything going for Brezza apart from overall length. However, those driving in city might actually like that as maneuverability in traffic and parking will be far more convenient.
If I were running Maruti, I would have discontinued the 1.3L variant of S-Cross and replaced that with Brezza in 6 -8 Lakh price bracket. I would have also discontinued the 320 variant of S-cross and put that in a slightly bigger Brezza which would have been a proper SUV and price it from 8 – 10 Lakh (maybe a top end automatic variant at around 10.5 lakhs.
