Will be the mid-size SUV’s fifth generation model.

The current, fourth generation Land Rover Discovery 4, introduced at the 2009 New York International Auto Show, was a heavily updated version of the third generation Land Rover Discovery 3. However, unlike the latter, the fifth generation will be a drastically changed, completely new model, especially design-wise.

Adopting the new family design introduced with the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, the next-gen Land Rover Discovery will be heavily inspired by the Land Rover Discovery Vision concept and an unofficial rendering from Auto Bild shows its possible look.

The next-gen Land Rover Discovery, set to be introduced later this year, will be based on the PLA (Premium Lightweight Architecture) platform that currently underpins the Land Rover Range Rover and the Land Rover Range Rover Sport. The 2016 Land Rover Discovery will be around 300 kg lighter than the outgoing model.

There’s no word on the technical specifications of the next generation model yet, but it can be expected to be offered with the latest 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. Transmission choices will likely include 6-speed manual and 9-speed automatic. Needless to say, all-wheel drive will be standard.
