Confirmed to premiere at Auto Expo 2016.

According to a report on MotorOctane, VW India's compact sedan will be named 'VW Ameo'. Previous reports have speculated that it could be called 'VW Bora', or that a suffix would be added to the 'Polo' brand name.

The compact sedan will be based on the Polo platform.

The ICS (Indian Compact Sedan) as it is codenamed is confirmed to debut at the Auto Expo 2016, which will take place at the India Expo Mart in Greater Noida in the first week of February 2016. The market launch is also expected to take place at the show itself.

The ICS is based on the VW Polo platform. It will be powered by the 1.2-liter MPi three-cylinder petrol engine and the 1.5-liter TDI four-cylinder diesel engine offered on the Polo hatchback. It remains to be seen if VW India offers the 1.2-liter TSI engine with the 7-speed DSG on the Ameo.

Dual front airbags are expected to be standard on the ICS.

Given the brand's increased safety push, expect the Ameo to offer dual front airbags as standard. Top-end variants would be equipped with alloy wheels, a multifunction steering wheel, a 2-DIN Bluetooth-enabled music system and automatic climate control.

The Ameo will rival the likes of the Maruti Dzire (current segment leader), Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, Tata Zest and the Ford Figo Aspire. VW India could also choose to export the compact sedan to markets like Nepal where competitor products already exist.
