A Chinese website has leaked the first ever spyshots of the Suzuki Gixxer 250 (Suzuki GSX R250 / Suzuki GW 250) taken at Haojue Changzhou factory of Suzuki in China, thus confirming the model’s existence. According to the media, it is expected to be shown at the Auto Expo 2016 in Greater Noida in February and launch in India the same year.
There had been several media reports about a quarter-litre Gixxer and reputed publications had posted renderings of the model with inspiration from the upcoming Suzuki GSX-R1000R.
The spied model seems to have some resemblance to the GSX-R1000. Some amount of part/design sharing from the entry-level Gixxers (the 155 and the SF) can be seen on the Gixxer 250/GSX-R250 as well. The instrument cluster is almost the same as the Gixxer’s, and the switchgear consoles appear to be identical too.
Unlike the SF which is merely a faired version of the street fighter, retaining the single-piece handlebar and a long, straight seat structure, the Gixxer 250 gets clip-on handlebars and split seats. The latter reminisces the Yamaha R15’s tall positioning of the pillion seat. The overall stance and riding position suggests that it will be touted as a sports tourer than a track-bred machine. Hence it will compete with the Honda CBR250R and the upcoming Hero HX250R.
The details of the powertrain on the Gixxer 250 are yet to be uncovered. It is likely that the motorcycle uses a retuned version of the twin-cylinder quarter-litre engine that powers the Suzuki Inazuma tourer. The liquid-cooled 248 cc inline-twin engine produces close to 26 PS of maximum power and 24 Nm of peak torque on the Inazuma, and is mated to a six-speed gearbox.
