Autocar UK has worked on a new render of the 2017 BMW 5 Series, based on spyshots that have been surfacing online lately. According to them, the next generation 5 Series will make its world debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show that opens on October 1, 2016.
Like with the 2016 BMW 7 Series, the next 5 Series will take an evolutionary step forward, with respect to design. It will borrow design cues from the Pininfarina-designed BMW Gran Lusso Concept, featuring a bolder front end with sleek LED headlamps (optional laser lighting), large BMW kidney grille with active cooling, LED foglamps, and simple bumper design.
The side profile is kept clean and could sport chrome elements, while the rear-end will get OLED taillamps, and cutouts for chrome finished taillpipes. Customers could choose between 5 different styling packages: Standard, Sport, Pure Excellence, M Sport and Individual.
It will ride on the all new BMW CLAR platform, which has a combination of materials such as carbonfibre, aluminium, magnesium and high-strength steel. This collectively helps engineers to shed up to 100 kg (not confirmed) compared to the current model.
Interior spyshots have revealed that the next 5 Series will adopt an interior styling nearly similar to the new 7 Series. It will feature high-resolution digital instruments for HVAC contols, a free-standing infotainment monitor for the iDrive 5.0 with support for touch and air gestures, new multi-function steering wheel, as well as upgraded switchgear and materials.
The engine lineup will, according to Autocar, comprise of BMW’s latest B47 diesel and B48 petrol 2.0-liter four-cylinder units, B57 diesel and B58 petrol 3.0-liter in-line six-cylinder engines, and a revised 444 bhp 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine from the 2016 BMW 750i. The most powerful diesel variant is a quad-turbocharged version of the new six-cylinder B57 diesel, which will serve as a successor to the BMW M550d.
At the top-end of the spectrum is the highly anticipated BMW M5, which is expected to output around 600 hp from an upgraded 4.4-liter MPower V8 engine. Along with a 6-speed manual, the report states that the BMW 5 Series will feature a 9-speed automatic gearbox, which is a first for the brand.
