The quality and features of the new 7 Series could be inherited by the G30.

A new speculative rendering of the next generation BMW 5 Series (codenamed BMW G30) has been released by OmniAuto.it, which suggests that the next 5er could look just like a scaled down 2016 BMW 7 Series.

2017 BMW 5 Series (BMW G30) side rendering
The 2017 BMW 5 Series will be based on the 7 Series’ CLAR platform and shed about 100 kg.

The 2017 5 Series could expand but not in weight. The new 5er would have considerably larger cabin and boot volume, but as it will be generated on the 7-Series’ CLAR platform, a significant weight loss is expected, to the tune of 100 kg.

The equipment list is also foreseen to be borrowed from the flagship sedan, as spy shots of the 2017 5 Series test mules have already suggested that items like the digital instrument console, and larger iDrive controller, are taken from existing 7er’s parts bin. With them, features like self-parking system and gesture control interface, are also likely to be inherited from the 7 Series. Additionally, the new 5-Series will feature full LED headlamps.

The powertrain list for next generation 5-Series could have direct-injected, turbocharged – four-, six- and eight-cylinder engine choices like what’s in the current roster. In addition, a plug-in hybrid variant has been spotted, which is believed to have common components with the powertrain of the existing BMW 530Le sold exclusively in China.
