Hyundai after launching the i20 Active in India is targeting the European markets with its pseudo crossover. The first spyshots, also showing the interior of the car, testing in Europe, has emerged today.

As per reports from the region, the model is scheduled to be unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show that starts on September 15, with the showroom launch taking place in early 2016.

The i20 Active will have the same recipe followed by its Indian sibling. That means a higher ground clearance, new wheels, plastic body cladding and roof rails enriching the European-spec i20 hatchback. The European version, built in Turkey, will differ from the Indian specification in some aspects, beginning with bigger bumpers, a sunroof, and with a host of safety features already found in the standard i20 which include six airbags, lane departure warning, hill start assist as well as active safety systems such as Vehicle Stability Management, ESP, EBS and ABS.

As the sub-4 meter rule doesn’t apply in the UK, the i20 Active can be up to 10 mm longer, 26 mm wider, 50 mm taller and have 20 mm more ground clearance than the standard hatch, taking the total to 190 mm. The change in dimensions is due to the body fitments, and hence will not make the car any roomier.

Higher ground clearance, body cladding, new bumpers and a roof rail come in place to lend the i20 an outdoorsy feel.

Power will likely be derived from the existing range of 1.2-, 1.4-liter petrol and 1.1- and 1.4-liter diesel units. Hyundai will, in all probability, also offer its all-new 1.0-liter, three-cylinder T-GDi Kappa turbo petrol motor, spotted on the new test mule, which is scheduled to start production by the end of this year.

As it shares its FWD chassis with the i20, the Active will not get an all-wheel drive variant. Pricing will not be a major departure from the standard i20.

Further details are awaited, and will hopefully be divulged prior to the unveiling of the car in Frankfurt later this year.
