Will be based on a longer variant of the SkyActiv platform.

Mazda has, apparently, begun testing of the next generation Mazda CX-9 SUV in United States, as evidenced by the first spyshots of the test mule submitted by Carscoops reader, Ken.

The 2017 Mazda CX-9 will sport a design that is evolutionary and more dynamic than the current model, featuring a larger grille and sleek headlamps.

Straight off the bat, it’s clear that the 2017 Mazda CX-9 will adopt a more dynamic styling and draw more design influence from the KODO – Soul of Motion – philosophy than the last facelift of the outgoing generation (current model). Noticeable features include an upright and bigger grille, sleeker headlamps that could borrow adaptive LED tech from the Mazda CX-5.

The Mazda CX-9 will lose the Ford-sourced CD3 platform as well as the 3.7-liter V6 engine for Mazda’s own SkyActiv platform. The replacing engine will likely be the 2.5-liter SkyActive G, which delivers 184 hp in the top-spec Mazda CX-5.

The engine options are likely to be naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions of the 2.5-liter SkyActiv engine.

Reports also suggest that Mazda will add a turbocharged version of the same engine in the next generation CX-9, which will produce north of 275 hp. It could be paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission as standard, and an AWD system will be offered as optional equipment.
