Most likely a China-exclusive variant.

Given the popularity of long wheelbase models of standard vehicles in China, BMW is looking to add the next generation BMW X1 to its LWB lineup, which currently includes the 3-Ser, 5-Ser and 7-Ser.

A new set of spyshots reveal a slightly undisguised prototype of the next generation BMW X1 (F49) with a longer rear door. Rumor has it that it will be 11 centimeters longer than the standard wheelbase model.

The new BMW X1 will be based on the front-wheel-drive UKL platform, which also underpins the 2-Series Active Tourer and new Mini Cooper range. It will still be available with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system, but with a front wheel drive bias.

Powering the next X1 is most likely a range of 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol and diesel units, or a more-powerful 2.0-liter four-cylinder motors of both fuel types. The transmission will be a choice between a 6-speed manual and an 8-speed ZF automatic, although Indian-spec models would only get the latter. A 5+2 seat version of the new X1 is also in the pipeline, verified by test mules that have been snagged regularly over the last 12-16 months.

If there can be a long wheelbase X1, can there also be a short wheelbase 1er, please? So to squeeze the car’s overall length to 3999 mm? 😉 That along with the new brilliant little 1.5l, 3 pot diesel mill will get the 1er to sell for around 14 lakh rs out there.
& ohh, this change is no excuse to convert the 1er into an ordinary cab-forward, FWD car. For that there will be the Audi A1 😉
