A 6-speed transmission will be a first for Tata Motors.

Tata Motors plans on working its Horizonext magic with the Aria being next in-line (post the Indica-based Kite twins) to undergo a complete overhaul. The Hexa concept, a precursor showing the possible design of the future crossover, debuted at the Geneva Motor Show last month with a 2.2-liter VariCOR 400 diesel engine.

According to a report on Autocar India, the Hexa when it goes on sale will be paired to 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions, a first for Tata's passenger vehicles. At the moment, even SUVs as expensive and powerful as the Aria and Safari Storme are equipped with a 5-speed manual only.

The 2.2-liter engine would produce about 154 hp and 400 Nm of torque, with drive going to all wheels in case of the top-end variant.

The Hexa is expected to replace the Aria, though its based on the same platform.

Other features seen on the Hexa concept which would make its way to the production version include ESP, 6-airbags with side and curtain airbags, LED position lights, 6-seat cabin configuration with Captains chairs for the second row and leather seats with twin-needle stitching.
