Toyota mulling over sub-4m sedan and compact SUV for India – Report

Compact SUV expected to be priced under INR 10 lakhs.

According to Business Standard, Toyota is currently working on two new global products that will also be launched in India and designed around the requirements of an average Indian customer. The two products in question are a sub-4m sedan and a compact SUV.

The report highlights that senior product officials from Toyota have begun paying visits to India to understand the local demand and product requirements for its success. A similar practice was also followed when Toyota was working on the Etios and Etios Liva.

The compact SUV segment is growing at a very rapid pace, fueled by the success of Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster. With Maruti, Tata Motors and Hyundai also looking to enter the highly competitive segment, it would be surprising to see Toyota ignoring this segment for long. No further details currently exist on the upcoming compact SUV, though one can speculate that the car in question could be the next generation Toyota Rush, with cues borrowed from the Daihatsu CUV concept.

Along with the SUV, Toyota is also looking to develop a sub-4m sedan. It could share the new platform with the SUV and priced lower than the Etios sedan.

With the two new products for India, and current products like the Innova and Fortuner stepping into their respective next generations, Toyota will soon offer a wider and younger model range for the Indian market, which could help improve sales figures for the company, currently positioned fifth in the country.

At 4150mm, Toyota’s avanza would be the best car to fill this space. Its a RWD on BOF chassis layout still managing less than 1.1 ton weight!! Its got 3 row of seating. Toyota already sources small diesel engines from BMW. If Toyota will mate this car to BMW’s B37 three pot diesel mill, this car would be just as revolutionary as the Innova during its launch. & yes Toyota would need to chop off 15cm from this already compact car to qualify for sub4M 😉

Toyota just can’t do it. They will either price it high or deliver a poor quality product.
