2016 Hyundai Tucson bags 4,200 pre-orders in 4 days - Korea

Previewed at the Geneva Motor Show, the 2016 Hyundai Tucson crossover has garnered 4,200 pre-orders in four days in South Korea. The pre-order figure alone is more than double of the number of Tucsons Hyundai managed to sell - 1,751 units - in January 2015 domestically.

The Tucson for the Korean market comes with a 1.7-liter diesel engine or a 2-liter diesel engine, and will be available in 2WD and 4WD versions, matched to a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox. More product info is expected in the following weeks.

The Tucson is targeted at Koreans in their 20s to 40s, and competes with the Ssangyong Tivoli and Samsung QM3 (Renault Captur).

While official sales in Korea is set to begin in the later part of March, the 2016 Tucson will make its European debut in the second half of this year. The popular SUV stands at 4,475 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width, 1,645 mm in height and gets a wheelbase of 2,670 mm. The Tucson for the European market in Czech Republic.

In Europe, powering the new Tucson are two petrol and two diesel engines. The base 1.6-liter GDI engine makes a healthy 135 PS and is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The turbo petrol engine makes 176 PS and will be supported either by the 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual clutch transmission.

The Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid Concept was also shown in Geneva, but production plans were not confirmed.

The base 1.7-liter diesel develops 115 PS with a 6MT, and finally the 2.0-liter diesel is available in states of 136 PS and 184 PS paired to a 6MT or 6AT. All engines meet Euro 6 emission norms.

In terms of safety, the European-spec SUV gets autonomous emergency braking, blind spot detection, and a smart parking assist system.
