Expected to launch in June 2015.
Mahindra is currently prepping a facelift for its off-roader Thar, which is expected to be launched in June 2015. It’s the first facelift for the model, since its debut in 2010. Ahead of its launch, a set of spyshots by 4×4 India reveal the changes in tow.
Exterior wise, the Mahindra Thar 2015 could feature a new plastic and metal-mixed front bumper, bigger side-steps for easier entry, and fender extensions for the top-spec CRDe variant. The most noticeable change is the rear canopy, which is now tilted from the back.
It is the Mahindra Thar’s interior that embraces many new updates, as compared to the exterior. The 2015 model has a new dual tone dashboard housing circular HVAC vents with silver finish, and a new instrument cluster. It borrows the steering wheel, HVAC controls and the handbrake lever from the Bolero, and has a beige gear lever housing with two cup holders.
No mechanical upgrades have been reported, as of now. The current Thar is available with a 2.5-litre DI unit that produces 63 hp and 182.5 Nm of torque, or a more-powerful 2.5-litre CRDe engine that makes 105 hp and 247 Nm of torque. It is paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox, and is available in 2WD (rear wheel drive) or 4WD versions.
The Mahindra’s Thar’s off-road capability and rugged yet classic Willys-inspired design attracts many off-road enthusiasts around India. The full list of changes will be revealed closer to or when Mahindra launches the updated Thar this year, reportedly in June.
