Regains leadership position.
The Honda City, after losing its segment leadership position to the new Maruti Ciaz in October 2014, has reclaimed its crown. November 2014 saw Honda Cars India sell 7,252 units of the City, whereas Maruti sold 5,232 units of the Ciaz. Sales of the Ciaz dropped by 17 percent compared to October 2014.
Honda Cars India started a second shift of production at its second plant in Tapukara, Rajasthan, which ensured better availability of the City, the company’s senior Vice President for Marketing & Sales, Mr. Jnaneswar Sen, said in a statement.
The City continued to be the best selling model for the company, accounting for 47 percent of domestic sales. Of the 15,263 units sold by Honda last month, the Amaze contributed 3,310 units, the Mobilio 3,589 units, the Brio 1,050 and the CR-V sold 62 units. Compared to November 2013 where the company sold 9,332 units, November 2014 witnessed a growth of 64 percent.
Maruti’s total domestic sales stood at 97,069 units, a 1 percent growth compared to November 2013’s 96,062 units. Premium compact cars like the Swift, Dzire, Ritz and Celerio contributed 37,083 units while entry-level models like the Alto and Wagon R sold 35,753 units.
Maruti plans to launch a sportier RS variant of the Ciaz next year to further bolster the appeal of the sedan.
