Based on a new ladder-frame platform.

Ahead of its global launch next year, Toyota is intensively testing the next generation Fortuner and Innova. The all-new SUV was spied in this instance in Australia where it shows its imposing side profile.

The rear window seems longer than the current model indicating better space for rear seat passengers.

The current Fortuner measures a generous 4.7 meters in length, and judging by this spyshot, the new Fortuner will easily match this specification if not better it. The extended length of the rear window (compared to the current model) hints that space in second and third rows could be an improvement over the outgoing model.

The 2016 Fortuner (and Innova) is based on an all-new ladder-frame platform, which insiders say will be just as rugged as the current generation model. Being based on the capable Hilux pickup (which will also be replaced next year), the Fortuner has established its presence as a well rounded premium SUV in the Indian market.

Just like the current model pictured here, the new Fortuner will be offered with manual and automatic transmissions.

Both products (Fortuner and Innova) are expected to be revealed next year, though they will not go on sale in India until 2016. Toyota's new diesel engine range is expected to do duty in both cars, and manual and automatic transmissions will be offered, much like the current generation Fortuner.

The Fortuner is the best selling SUV in its class with average monthly sales accounting for 1,545 units (calculated over the past six months). With the new Ford Endeavour (Everest) having been announced with technically sound mechanicals and well designed interiors, Toyota really needs to step up the game with the new Fortuner to stay ahead in sales.
