Expected to be lighter and more agile than the current car.
Following the launch of Jaguar's 3-series rival, the XE, will be the next generation version of the company's midsize saloon XF. Both, its design and mechanicals are expected to receive substantial updates over the current version before it is finally showcased at the New York auto show in April 2015, says a report.
According to a report by Autocar, the next generation version of the Jaguar XF is likely to feature an overall sharper design, based on the upcoming XE. The coupe-like overall shape, the bold creases, and a revised grille are all going to be on the new XF. The idea behind following a design close to the XE is to make the brand more recognizable in newer markets, suggests the report.
It will be based on Jaguar's iQ platform (the one that underpins the XE), and that should mean more weight saving. And since the car is expected to use Jaguar's new 2-litre four cylinder (both petrol and diesel) Ingenium engines that debut on the XE, the overall weight drops by a considerable amount. According to the report, it can be as much as 100-150 kg from the use of the new structure and engines alone.
The weight saving will not only help get better fuel efficiency, it will also improve the handling characteristics, and that's something which would work well in Jaguar's favour, especially in case of the more focussed XFR and XFR-S twins. As for the interior, the car will make use of the new InControl infotainment system, and will also get the head up display as on the XE.
