Unveiled at the Auto Expo 2014.

It was yesterday that Maruti Wagon R was in news for successfully crossing the 15 lakh sales milestone, and today, it appears that there's a new version of Wagon R headed towards the market. Remember the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Xrest that the company presented at the 2014 Auto Show? Well, a production version has been spotted.

The Wagon R Xrest wants to be a cheaper alternative to the like of VW Polo, Fiat Avventura and Toyota Etios Cross.

Made to look like a crossover with all its added plastic bits and dual-tone treatment, the Wagon R Xrest is to the Wagon R what the Cross Polo and Etios Cross are to the Volkswagen Polo and Toyota Etios respectively. So mechanically it remains the same while cosmetically it seeks attention.

Coming to the vehicle spotted, it flaunts a black plastic cladding around the lower part of the body, silver skid guards on the sides, darkened tail-lamps, new look air vents flanked by plastic black garnish, roof rails, and alloy wheels. The front fascia has smoked projector headlamps, a new look radiator grille, the same black plastic cladding as on the sides, and a silver coloured bumper lip. On the inside, it gets a beige and black dual-tone treatment.

The lower body gets black plastic cladding with silver skid plates.

The same 1-litre K10B engine mated to a 5-speed transmission is expected to continue powering the car. The maximum power output is rated at 68 PS (67.04 bhp) while max torque is 90 Nm. And it's too soon to tell if MSIL will launch this as a petrol only option, since Wagon R's CNG variant does well in certain cities.

Also, for some reason, the black cladding doesn't extend to the rear bumper of the car that was spotted. Let's hope Maruti doesn't keep it that way if and when this version makes it to the market.
