Rapid to get a design overhaul next year.

Skoda Auto India will launch the Rapid with the new 1.5-liter TDI diesel engine on September 30. Apart from the new engine and an automatic transmission for the diesel variant, the Rapid will not see major design changes later this month.

The Rapid will get an engine update later this month, and major design changes next year.

A cosmetically enhanced Rapid will launch sometime next year however. The carmaker is reported to have outsourced technical development for the refreshed Rapid to Mahindra Engineering Services to lend it Indianized touches.

Speaking to Indian Autos Blog at the launch of the refreshed Yeti, Mr. Pawel Szuflak, Director for Sales and Marketing for Skoda Auto India Private Limited, said –

It (Rapid facelift) is a long time away from now, but what is good and what is interesting from the Indian market perspective is that we decided to go ahead with some changes with the Rapid here in India. The whole process of the development, the whole construction of the design and all the items are happening here in India. But how it will look finally, and what will be seen in the car, I think its a bit early to talk about.

The facelifted Rapid could take a page from the Euro Rapid’s design or go another route like how the Punto facelift did.

Though Indian inputs have been taken into account, the Rapid facelift is expected to somewhat resemble the European version with design elements like the wide grille, slim headlight clusters, and C-Shaped taillights.

Competitors: VW Vento, Honda City, Maruti Ciaz, Hyundai Verna, Fiat Linea

Expected Price: INR 7.5 – 11 lakhs, ex-Showroom

Launch date: 2015

Hmm design work outsourced to Mahindra!
    I can imagine the outcome.
As long as Skoda/Volkswagen treat India as a second grade market, sorry I’m not buying their cars.
India and aspirations of Indians have changed. Most people realize what is European/US spec and not willing to compromise in this segment.
These folks are complicating their strategies with incomplete or wrong perception of the market’s psyche – most of their sales are anyway happening due to the huge discounts being offered.

Sometimes I think they may not be that dumb after all to not realize it. Which means this is their deliberate strategy to treat India as a dumping yard – which makes me fume more!
Anyway easiest thing to do is just ignore them until they treat us equally.

Imho skoda will not offer any value and continue to suck at least for another 3 years or till the time they ignore the service. Localisation levels are pathetic. Check the cost of services then any body will conclude the same.
I as a customer would stick to Asian cars for another few years at least.
    Own both and enjoying )

    1. Ravi Mehta says:

Hi DRG, are there any specific issues that you have faced with Skoda?? And have you ever tried reporting those issues? If you have been reading recent reports, Skoda is taking efforts to ensure that the customer service issues are looked after. And I have personally known a few Skoda owners who are happy. Apart from that, the brand is very aspirational and the cars are sturdy and great to drive.

  3. manoj says:

This is harakiri by Skoda for not matching the headlight and front bumper to the overall square stance of the body on the current face lift. This is the sole differentiation as the headlight assembly of the current Skoda rapid looks like an Old lady’s face on a young models body. Coupled with the pathetic service quality, its tree hugging suicidal bet with the old styling is sure to burn their pockets. I am not going to buy one until the service and its styling issues are fixed.

    1. Kartik Rai says:

      Dear Manoj,
Very true, I am of the same opinion. It is really disheartening to learn that Skoda is rolling out the Rapid with no cosmetic changes. The biggest disadvantage with Rapid currently are its dated looks…rather ugly. Mechanically it may outscore its cousin Vento, but the Vento scores on account of its more streamlined and proportional looks.
I have been eagerly waiting for the new Rapid with Skoda’s Euro design language. However, the reality seems far. Undoubtedly, Skoda cars are way more elegant that Hondas, Marutis, Hyundais and others. The designs are conservative and dignified, apart from the exceptional built quality. Certainly, an updated Rapid is going to be a game changer for Skoda.
I am afraid there will be few takers for the Sep. version Rapid.
