Mercedes-Benz India launched its GLA entry-level crossover today. Based on the same platform as the A and B Class hatchbacks, the GLA rivals the likes of the Volvo V40 Cross Country, Audi Q3 and BMW X1. The GLA is available in two versions in India, the prices of which are below -

- Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 CDI Sport Diesel - INR 36.9 lakhs
- Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 Sport Petrol - INR 36 lakhs

The GLA 200 is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that makes 181 bhp and 300 Nm of torque, while the diesel variant uses a 2.2-liter engine to produce 135 bhp and 300 Nm of torque. Both engine options are given a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission which sends the drive to the front wheels. A 4WD variant is not offered.
The diesel version is offered in Style and Sport variants while the petrol version is available only in the top-end Sport trim.
The crossover has its dimensions at 4,417 mm in length, 1,804 mm in width and 1,494 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,699 mm. The ground clearance of the GLA measures 183 mm, while the boot space is good for 421 liters (1,235 liters with the seats folded).
In terms of equipment, the compact premium crossover packs in 18-inch alloy wheels, reverse camera, paddle shifters and a Harman Kardon music system.
The GLA is the fourth SUV in Mercedes-Benz India's portfolio, the others being the M Class, G Class (AMG) and the flagship GL Class.
Mercedes will soon launch the GLA 45 AMG in India. Apart from being performance oriented, the GLA 45 will also come with a 4WD system.
