Just-launched 1.5L TDI engine to be assembled first.
Volkswagen India today said that it will start assembling engines at its manufacturing plant in Chakan, Pune (Maharashtra) towards the end of the year. A full-fledged engine testing facility will also come up adjacent to the line.
Volkswagen India is investing 30 million euros (INR 240 crore) for the 1.5L engine and its assembly and production. The new engine line will generate over 260 jobs.
The new engine assembly line will be designed into the existing structure of the Volkswagen Pune plant. Occupying a floor space of 3,450 square meter, it can assemble over 98,000 engines in a three-shift-system at full capacity. The 1.5L engine assembled at this line will be introduced on the Polo and Polo GT TDI variants. Currently the 1.5L engine fitted to the Polo series is imported from Europe.
