Honda Cars India plans to export the recently launched Mobilio to the South African market, the company's director, Mr. Shigeru Yamazaki, told a newspaper recently. Mr. Yamazaki said that the company will start exports after some time, though the exact timeline was not decided yet.
It would appear that the immediate focus is on the domestic market, where the MPV has registered over 7,000 bookings. Launched last week, the Mobilio is available in petrol and diesel trims with prices ranging from INR 6.49 lakhs to INR 10.86 lakhs, ex-Showroom, New Delhi.
In the domestic market, the Mobilio competes mainly with the Maruti Ertiga, and this rivalry will continue in South Africa as well since the Ertiga is sold in that market. Suzuki sells only the petrol variant of the Ertiga in South Africa, but with manual and automatic gearbox choices.
Honda India already exports the Brio and Amaze (the Mobilio is based on the same platform as these cars) to the South African market. And apart from India, Indonesia is the only other production site to make the Mobilio. Hence there are good chances for the India-made Mobilio to be sold in South Africa.
