GM are working on the next gen Chevrolet Camaro with an objective of upsetting arch nemesis, the Ford Mustang, which graduated to a new generation late last year.

The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro would have a classic retro appeal with design cues borrowed from the second gen model.

While the new Ford Mustang's design is an evolution of its predecessor, Automobile Magazine claims that the next gen pony car from Chevrolet will derive its design inspiration from the iconic second gen Camaro which was introduced as the 1970½ model.

The magazine has also come up with a speculative rendering of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro. The rendering suggests that the new pony car will be a departure from the current car in terms of design and would have distinct features like a prominent front grille, wraparound front windshield, cantilevered roof (no B-Pillar) and a thick, steeply raked C-Pillar.

The next iteration of the Camaro is reported be based on the new Alpha platform that underpins the 2014 Cadillac CTS sedan. Thanks to the new architecture, the new sportscar would be significantly lighter than the outgoing model.

It is also reported that the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro would adopt a four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, possibly a tuned version of Cadillac CTS' 272 hp 2.0-litre motor, in order to compete with the Ford Mustang EcoBoost. The current 3.6-litre V6 and 6.2-litre V8 petrol engines are expected to be retained.

The next gen Chevrolet Camaro is expected to see the light of day in late-2015.
