Mercedes-Benz India today launched the diesel variant of their flagship luxury car, the S Class. The 2014 Mercedes S Class diesel is available in India in its S 350 CDI specification, and is priced at INR 1.07 crores, ex-Showroom, Pune. For reference, the S 500 petrol is priced at INR 1.36 crores, ex-Showroom, Mumbai.
The S Class diesel is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 engine which produces 254 hp at 3,600 rpm and 620 Nm of torque between 1,600-2,400 rpm. The engine uses a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox to send the drive to the rear wheels. The S Class diesel can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and achieve a top-speed electronically limited to 250 km/h. The sedan manages 16.66 km/l in the EU driving tests.
The S Class diesel, like the petrol model, is locally assembled at Mercedes India's Chakan plant through CKD (Completely Knocked Down) kits. For the first time ever, Mercedes India will also assemble the body of the S Class in India (in the previous generation, the body shell of the car would arrive complete in India). Mercedes commenced local assembly of the new S Class in March this year, assembling the V8 petrol model.
The S Class diesel will compete in India with the 2014 Audi A8 3.0L, BMW 7 Series 730 Ld and Jaguar XJ 3.0L. Apart from the Audi, the rest of these cars are assembled in India by way of CKD kits.
